Reichstag

German Parliament Building (Reichstag Building)

Built in 1894, the Reichstag Building was the site of a mysterious fire in 1933 which helped launch Hitler and the Nazis to power. The building became a powerful piece of propaganda for the Soviet Army, and was the site of some of the most intense fighting during the final days of the Battle of Berlin.

Left virtually empty throughout the Cold War, the Reichstag became the seat of the German parliament (Bundestag) once again after German reunification in 1990. Re-opening in 1999, the renovated building still contains some graffiti left by the victorious Soviet Army, and a glass dome which is open to the public for tours.
