Berlin Wall Bike Tour

East to West Berlin Wall Guided Bike Tour

For the second half of the twentieth century, divided Berlin was the epicenter of the Cold War. On this half-day tour, we leave the city center to get away from the commonplace sights and dive into how the Wall made Berlin the unique city it is today. We will ride along the route of the Berlin Wall, crossing between East and West to see and experience the differences that remain to this day.

Beginning with the ideological differences between East and West, we will take you through the origins of the Cold War, the Berlin Airlift, and the division of Germany. Along the way, we will point out how global events helped allow the construction of the Berlin Wall.

A bit further along, we will show you the Palace of Tears, a former checkpoint where Westerners were scrutinized by Border Guards during visits to the East. You will see one of the only remaining East German Border Guard Towers en route to the Berlin Wall Memorial and visit the sight of the most famous tunnel escapes. We take you to the place where secret East German police files are stored, and discuss how Berlin truly was the Capital of Spies. We will highlight how East German Churches were pivotal in bringing an end to the communist state. Your guide will tell you about ghost stations, escape attempts, espionage, and how the city memorializes this turbulent period in its history.

Throughout the tour, you’ll have plenty of time to get to know your guide and ask questions.  There are amazing photo opportunities throughout, and we will make sure that you get a chance to stop at each of them.  We will also stop for refreshments roughly half-way through (cost not included) and allow you some time to explore a former No Man’s Land on your own.

The half-day nature of the tour leaves you with plenty of time to see more of the city.  Our friendly guides would love to help you fill out your time by suggesting their favorite places for an iconic currywurst, the best museums to check out, the perfect dance club to stay out all night, or quite simply, a great address for a traditional German beer.

As with all of our other tours, our Berlin Wall Bike Tour maintains a leisurely pace.  We use comfortable city-cruiser style bicycles that are easy for everyone. This tour will leave you with a much better understanding of the Cold War and a deeper appreciation for Berlin.
