Enjoy the Thames River Bike Tour.

Explore ‘liquid history' and breathtaking urban landscapes by cycling both banks of London's famous river.

With smaller groups, a different route and a focus on the people's history, this tour is the perfect complement to our Royal London Bike Tour. Our tour guides offer legend and fact about a city that has united against Great Plagues, Fire and War, while developing into the cradle of modern civilization and commerce. For lunch, we invite you to wander through the aromas of London's oldest and largest food market (not included) before cycling across Tower Bridge and embarking on an incredible adventure.

FAQ

  • Expand/Collapse Are reservations required?

A reservation is required due to a limited number of spaces on the tour.

  • Expand/Collapse What is your cancellation policy?

We have a 72 hour cancellation policy for a full refund. If you miss the tour for any reason, we'll gladly reschedule you on another available tour anytime for up to a year. If you can't make it, it is a good idea to email us ahead of time.

  • Expand/Collapse Where is the meeting point?

The morning and evening tours meet directly outside Southwark Underground Station (Jubilee Line) where you will see your guide with one of our beach cruiser style bikes and holding a sign.

  • Expand/Collapse Do tours run all year round?

The River Thames tour is by reservations only. Please check the scheduling info on the tour page. Basically, if you can book it on our website, we're running it. And if not, do consider a private tour - if you have a decent size group (7+) or are willing to pay slightly more for the privilege, we will gladly create a bespoke tour for you at any time of the year.

  • Expand/Collapse Is the tour difficult?

There is a lot more road riding on this tour so you must be confident on a bike. It is not strenuous but is a little bit longer and a touch more intimidating than our Royal London Tour.

  • Expand/Collapse What is your weather policy?

We run tours rain or shine and have plenty of rain ponchos. We find tours in the rain to be a different kind of fun and an even more fun memory! If you have a reservation and the weather is really bad, you are welcome to reschedule the tour for any other day for up to year.

  • Expand/Collapse Do we stop for lunch?

Yes. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays we stop at Borough market, London's oldest and most atmospheric food market, which has a huge selection of food from around the world. There is also the opportunity to have a pint at a pub. On every other day you will have the option of cafes, a fish & chip restaurant or a pub.

  • Expand/Collapse Do we go inside the museums and monuments?

No, the bike tours are an overview of the sites and more about getting a feel for the city. However, on private tours you can arrange to take extra time at the sites if you'd like to go inside.

  • Expand/Collapse Will we be able to take photos?

Yes. There will be a chance to take many photos at the designated stops.

  • Expand/Collapse Is there a space to store bags or luggage?

Yes. You are welcome to leave bags, luggage or unwanted family members in our garages. Someone is usually in the office and it will be locked up if they have to leave. While we have never had a single case of theft or loss of items, you do leave them at your own risk.

  • Expand/Collapse Do you provide the bikes?

    Absolutely.

  • Expand/Collapse Can I supply my own bike?

You are welcome to bring your own bicycle and will receive a discount of 10%. Our insurance only covers the theft of our own bicycles, so please do bring your own lock for the lunch stop.

  • Expand/Collapse Is this tour appropriate for children?

We're a great family activity in London, however we recommend our River Thames and River Thames Evening Bike Tours for those aged 12 and older. Children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult on the tour.

    • Unfortunately, we do not have adult tricycles, tandems, or bikes with training wheels for adults or children that may be less confident in their riding ability.
    • Our city tours are very casual, with only slight elevation changes on varying surfaces including smooth gravel and pavement. It is necessary, however, that any person participating in our bike tours have at least some bike riding experience, and should be comfortable riding in a group.
  • Expand/Collapse Is a helmet included?

Yes. You are not compelled by law to wear helmets in the UK, but we have more than enough for everyone so the choice is entirely yours.

  • Expand/Collapse Do you rent bikes?

Yes, but, you must contact us ahead of time, especially during the summer when all the bikes may be taken up on the tours.

  • Expand/Collapse Can you suggest a bicycle repair shop in London?

Our very excellent mechanic, Alex, is available to work on your bike so please feel free to get in contact with us if you would like to book your bike in with him: http://www.lezcycles.com/about.html

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So happy we did this! This tour was great!! We were a little nervous before the start because we aren't avid cyclists--but that didn't matter in the slightest. This tour was awesome, and we will definitely be looking to do more tours with Fat Tire in the future on our vacations! The tour guide was very knowledgeable but also kept the tour very fun. We weren't a lot but seriously had the best time! A great intro to a new city that helped us decide what cites we would be going back to! Would definitely recommend this tour!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A good way to ses central London Four of us decided to take the tour and we were delighted with the result. Nicke, our guide, was very informative and ensured we had plenty of time to visit the interesting sights along the way. This was four hours of riding fun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really fun and just right. Nick was a great guide; the group was a perfect size and we covered just the right amount of territory. Very much enjoyed lunch at Borough Market. This works for all kinds of cyclists, even if you haven't been on a bike in a while.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun tour It was fun biking around the city and seeing all the different places in person. Stopping at the market for lunch is a genius idea as it allows people to get whatever they want. The only thing is it was hard to hear at times what he was saying unless you were close. Maybe have a Bluetooth speaker and mic or something so you can hear it all. The guide knew his stuff that's forshure along with a great personality. Would take another tour with him and fat tire

Rated 3 out of 5 by from London Tour This was our 3rd tour with Fat Tire and we enjoyed it as we have the past. However, we were disappointed with the communication sent about where to meet the morning of the ride. The address on the website is the corporate office so we showed up there. It is suggested to update your site to reflect the address of the meeting place or at least list that address by street name in the directions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Fun A great way to see London. It was about 4 hours but very chilled and easy going. We had a great guide in Max who was full of tales and interesting stories. Have used Fat Tires before and I would highly recommend them

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loads & loads of info !! Stephanie our guide was excellent & extremely knowledgable. Just a small point - with overhead helicopters etc drowning out the commentary, how about using a small microphone & amplifier/speaker ?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved The right amount of biking and stopping. Full of fun facts and great history. Our guide Stephanie was amazing. It was a nice overview of the area which allowed us to go back and explore on our own. Biking over Tower Bridge was beautiful. We leaned tons. A highlight of our trip!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great guide and balanced tour We experienced fat tire tours a few years ago in Paris and again in Paris just prior to traveling to London. While we loved the Paris tours, this one is my favorite so far. Your guide was very informative and knowledgeable but also low key and laid back. At a four hour experience it never felt long and my kids enjoyed riding, sight seeing and especially the Borough Market stop for lunch. Overall a well balanced tour experience made fantastic with a great guide. Wish I could remember his name - maybe Matthew? - but tour was Thursday July 27th. Great value for price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Fun! Great Way to See London To me, this is the perfect way to see a city. On a great, cozy bike moving at a comfortable pace in a relatively small group. I was offered a helmet if I wanted one. Saw many of the famous London sites, and was able to cover a lot of ground in the short period of time I had. I love Fat Tyre Bike Tours, and would do it again in any new city where the option was available!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from River Thames Bike Tour An excellent bike tour on both sides of the Thames. Nick (I believe his name is) was a super guide and he showed us some of the more unusual spots along the river. He even managed to have a little that with each of us, during the four hour tour. We managed to cross both Tower Bridge and Westminster Bridge, without incidents :D Well, at times we did loose a couple of riders, but in the end they managed to catch up with the rest of us ... I've been to London 25+ times, but this was my first time on a bike in this city. But I'll go again, on another tour, on my next trip there. Absolutely recommended to anyone wanting to do something out of the ordinary on their London trip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tour This was a great tour mainly of the South Bank of the Thames. You will see the usual sites (e.g., the London Eye), but you get the history and commentary of a guide. I loved the ride across the London Bridge. Due to the crazy London traffic, the bike riding was sometimes challenging.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Hidden Treasures of London Revealed! I had done a Fat Tire bike tour in Paris and loved it. The Thames River tour was even better - although the road riding was a bit more challenging. We had a chance to see a lot of interesting sites including a Street Art section in the Lower Marsh and the Borough Market. Loved biking across the Tower Bridge. Nick was a great guide, and have a terrific dry British sense of wit!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from River Thames tour Despite the dreary weather and rain, we had a delightful tour. Saw parts of the city that I would likely not have appreciated otherwise. Our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great stories! I've lived in London for 37 years and now want to learn more about a city I've taken for granted. The tour guide was patient, knowledgeable and gave me the confidence to ride on the roads of central London, albeit for a short time, as most of the ride is cycle lanes and off-road. I loved the stories, which brought his presentation to life. Four hours plus just flew by!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great way to tour the city above ground! Had a great time touring the city and stopping at Borough Market for lunch. A nice addition to the Royal Tour which I went on a few years ago. Nick was an informative, fun, and laid back guide...putting up with the many shenanigans of our eclectic group. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really good fun...interesting too! We recently went on the Royal park tour. The instructor made us feel safe and took care of everyone when crossing the road etc. The cycle was mainly in the parks which was really great! We learnt a lot about the "untold history" of the iconic buildings we passed, which made it fun! All in all a great day out getting to know London!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful time! The Thames River tour with Fat Tire Bike Tours was a great way to see the city. My husband, my 16 year old son and I took the tour. We covered a lot of ground, but the ride was leisurely and we had plenty of time to take pictures and see things closely. I would highly recommend Nick, who was personable, full of information and gave great advice on restaurants and other things to do in the city.
