Munich Grand Segway Tour + Neuschwanstein Castle Day Trip Package

This is one of our most popular packages, and for good reason - take part in our Munich Grand Segway Tour to see all of Munich’s main attractions, then join our Neuschwanstein Castle Day Trip, this famoues castle sits picturesquely at the foot of the Bavarian Alps about a 1:45 drive from Munich. Built by “Mad” King Ludwig II, this fairy tale castle is the most popular day trip around Munich, and for good reason: the backdrop of lakes and the Alps are seemingly out of a story book. These tours are great compliments to each other and make for a great way to spend your time in the city and really feel like you’ve gotten to know it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Expand/Collapse Munich Grand Segway Tour
    • Expand/Collapse What is a Segway?

The SegwayTM Human Transporter is the first of its kind-a self-balancing, personal transportation device designed to go anywhere people do. Easy to use and operate, the two-wheeled Segway sports high-tech gyroscopes that automatically respond to your body’s movements, “sensing” when it should speed up and slow down.

You stand on a small platform between left and right wheels as you hold onto handlebars at a comfortable waist height. The Segway handles the balancing for you, so that you’re always upright as you glide through any environment.

You may also visit Segway LLC’s site for more detailed info.

    • Expand/Collapse Are Fat Tire Segway Tours appropriate for children?

Basically, no.  Riding Segways in Germany come with a few restrictions:

      • Each participant must have a valid driver's license and have that license with them on tour (provisional and “leaner’s permits” unfortunately don’t work).

    • Expand/Collapse How far in advance do I need to reserve?

Occasionally we do have space available should you call the morning of your desired tour. This, however, is rare and we suggest you reserve as far ahead of time as possible. We tend to fill all of our tours.

    • Expand/Collapse Is there a damage deposit for the Segway tour?

While no deposit is taken before tour, you will need to fill out a fast disclaimer and damage waiver form before joining tour.

    • Expand/Collapse Can I rent a Segway without a guide?

Unfortunately, we cannot rent our Segways out to individuals without a guide. Since our tours are virtually always full, we need all machines for our tour customers.

  • Expand/Collapse Neuschwanstein Castle Day Trip
    • Expand/Collapse Can I have a more detailed breakdown of the day?

Sure. From the meeting point we walk about 100 meters to the waiting private bus. It’s about a 1 hour 45 minute drive to the castle area. The guide will then use the special tour operator access line to purchase entry tickets for those that wish to take the guided tour inside the Neuschwanstein castle.

The guides then take those that wish on a guided bike tour of the beautiful surrounding area. Along the way, weather permitting, there is time for a swim in Swan Lake, one of four lakes in the area.

Lunch is at a brewery near the castle. Cost for entrees range from €10-€15. Lunch costs are not included in the tour. There is a mini golf course on the brewery grounds, and with outdoor seating and a view of the castle, it’s a fantastic break.

After lunch we head to the castle.  Should you wish to take a public bus or horse & carriage up, that can be arranged. Most choose to walk up to the castle to Mary’s Bridge for fantastic photo opportunities of the castle and surrounding areas.

For those that wish to take the guided tour inside the castle, that 45 minute tour is led by official museum staff. For those that do not wish to go inside, they can enjoy the outdoors and hike further.

The tour then heads down from the castle to the waiting bus for the journey back to Munich.

    • Expand/Collapse Why is the entry fee in to the castle not included?

The tour is set up to be as flexible as possible.  Some people do not want to go inside but prefer to soak up more of the beautiful Alps and the surrounding areas. You can decide once you’re on the bus heading to the castle if you would like to go into the castle or not. Should you wish to join that guided tour, please bring the €14 for the entry fee in cash.

    • Expand/Collapse What is “Fat Tire Approved”?

We cannot operate all tours that would be of interest to our patrons, so in a couple instances we have partnered with trusted vetted partners to offer these tours. With these Fat Tour Approved partners you can expect the high level of customer service you’ve come to appreciate with Fat Tire Tours.

    • Expand/Collapse Where is the meeting point for the tour?

Neuschwanstein Castle tours meet the Fat Tire Approved tour operator shop located very centrally around the corner from the rear entrance of the famous Hofbäuhaus beer hall. Coming from Marienplatz, walk down the street named "Tal", past McDonald's, and make a left on Hochbrücken Strasse. The shop is about 150 meters on the left, just past the police station and before the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

    • Expand/Collapse Why is taking a bus to the castle better than the train?

Taking a bus to the castle is faster and more comfortable. The train is slower, makes frequent stops, and is not air-conditioned. Also, from the train station in Füssen it is still necessary to take a public bus to the Neuschwanstein castle.

    • Expand/Collapse Is this tour appropriate for children?

This is quite an active day, but there are children’s bikes and children can participate in all the activities.

    • Expand/Collapse What if I don’t want to participate in the bike tour?

That’s no problem. Please just speak with your guide at the start of the day what you prefer to do – such as alternatively go in the neighboring Hohenschwangau Castle – so that the guide can help make the most of your day.

    • Expand/Collapse Can I bring my own lunch?

Yes, you should prefer to picnic with your own bag lunch, you can do so at the same brewery restaurant.

    • Expand/Collapse What should I bring with me on the tour?

Please wear comfortable shoes as this an active day. You will also want to bring cash for the castle tickets and lunch, should you desire either of these. Please also consider bringing an extra layer. The bus will be locked when we’re not it in, so you can leave what you don’t need in the bus.
