Visit Stratford-Upon-Avon and Warwick Castle *Chaperone Only*

Wednesday March 7th 2018

Leaving London in the morning, you’ll travel to Warwick Castle, one of the oldest non-royal castles in the world. Originally built as an earthen mound fortress to ward off Vikings in 964, it was massively expanded by William the Conqueror (who also built the original Tower of London and Windsor Castle) to be a base for his forces in the central part of England. Expanded throughout its history, it has seen treachery and bravery, and has served as a major center for the English nobility as the home of the Earls of Warwick. Beyond touring the castle, students will have the opportunity to see the world’s largest trebuchet. A medieval catapult used for attacking castles, trebuchet was one of the most fearsome engines of war medieval man developed. You’ll also be able to explore other parts of the castle, including the dungeons.

After leaving Warwick we’ll head over to nearby Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace and early home of William Shakespeare. We’ll get to see his birthplace and the childhood home of his wife Anne Hathaway, where we’ll learn about renaissance views on courtship and perhaps pick up a trick or two.
