Planning a Romantic European Proposal

By Kate Sheppard

Planning the ultimate proposal that your partner will remember for the rest of their life is no mean feat. You can rest assured that this will be one of the stand-out moments for both of you, but it does take some due care and planning.

There is an awful lot to consider and plenty of factors that can play a crucial role in deciding just how special this moment will be: personal touches that reflect how you feel, references to things from your journey together so far, and romantic settings, can all make the magical moment all the more special.

You’ll also need to ensure you get a good photo of the moment or enlist the help of a cohort to get the perfect video of the moment in question to cement the memories for life, but none of this can be planned without first making two key steps.

Let’s take a look at two of the major factors that will help to tie in all the other considerations that will make this the most important moment in your life so far.

Choosing the Ring

The first stage must always be the ring; it’s an object that will symbolize your relationship and the meaning it holds. Each band is different and tells a new story, so trying to align your relationship with the perfect engagement ring is a crucial step.

If you’re at a loss, then a great place to start is the things your partner holds dear. Subtle solitaire designs quietly hint at luxury but won’t steal the show; larger five-stone designs will naturally receive more attention and be at home when paired with gorgeous clothing; colored gemstones can be a great way to match a ring to a personality, and vintage rings offer stories and depth to your romantic tale.

It’s important to remember that you can find a ring that will be a perfect match for your partner’s personality, highlighting certain features and complimenting their personality.

Once you have settled on the ring, there are several other things you are going to have to think about; for example, choosing the time of year to get down on one knee. Waiting for snow can be a gamble, but it can deliver excellent pictures; blue skies and the great outdoors will always be a winner, and changing of the leaves can give seemingly impossible color to a special occasion.

Of course, the second most important element of your proposal is choosing the perfect location; if your partner loves to travel, experience new cultures, try new foods, learn about the history of a place, and speak to locals, then choosing a European city is surely the way to go.

The Perfect Location

Europe, as a whole, offers an incredible amount of romance. It’s filled with ancient cities, castles, stunning architecture, excellent food, and sublime scenery. The only problem is that it’s pretty huge, so how on earth do you go about narrowing down the perfect proposal destination?

Well, this list should go some way to helping you decide on the ultimate spot for a stunning and romantic proposal. Let’s look at some of the best places to propose in Europe that readily offer romance and beauty.

Paris | The City of Love

Paris is the obvious place to start and is known around the world as the City of Love. It was one of the first places in the modern world where women became free to marry for love, coinciding with Paris being one of the pinnacle cities of high society.

Champagne, wine, fine foods, gorgeous palatial gardens, and stunning churches litter the city, and many world-famous writers, musicians, and artists were generated by the sheer romance and beauty of the place. So it makes sense that the term stuck around as you can find much of this fairytale-esque romance in modern Paris.

The list of beautiful attractions is seemingly endless, so you’re spoilt for choice when looking for the perfect proposal location. Despite the tragedy that struck the staggeringly beautiful Notre Dame cathedral a few years ago, its location on the banks of the Seine still makes for a truly gorgeous spot in the heart of the city.

Then there is the Eiffel Tower, perhaps one of the most romantic and iconic spots in the world; you simply have to choose between proposing atop the tower or being able to include it in your pictures!

You’ve also got Disneyland Paris, the Louvre, and one of the most stunning palaces in the world, Versailles. It may seem impossible to choose from a long list of romantic spots, but Paris pretty much guarantees that you can’t get it wrong!

Rome | The Ancient City

The saying “all roads lead to Rome” comes from a very real ideology; when the Roman Empire was at its height, Rome was the center of the modern world. Now, Rome stands as one of the most impressive, historical, and romanticized capitals in the world, with an estimated 15 million tourists visiting the city in 2022; pretty impressive post-pandemic numbers.

If you and your partner are foodies and history buffs, then there is quite literally nowhere better on the planet than Rome for the perfect proposal. You can enjoy some of the world’s most iconic historic landmarks like the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the Roman Forum.

You will also find spots like Trevi Fountain, immortalized in the 1960s classic La Dolce Vita, the Spanish Steps, and the mind-blowing St. Peter’s Basilica. Rome oozes culture, history, and romance from every pore, and it’s very easy to get swept up in the magic of the city.

London | Britain’s Finest

If you are a true patriot, love all things British, or are simply looking to explore somewhere new, then London is pretty hard to beat. It’s easy to forget that we in the UK have one of the most influential, beautiful, and historic cities in the world right on our doorstep.

London is home to a unique magic and buzz that can’t be found elsewhere and offers world-class culture in the form of museums, theaters, and art galleries. It is packed with incredible architecture, landmarks recognized worldwide, and some of the most beautiful and varied city parks in the world.

Incredible proposal spots are easy to come by in this city with the mighty River Thames at its heart. Starting with Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, then heading along the river to the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey, followed by a stroll into St James’ Park to visit the staggering Buckingham Palace, offers you some of the big hitters in no time at all; but there’s more.

There is so much to see in London that you’re probably better off hopping on a bike tour so you can reach as many of these spectacles as possible. Particular favorites for a proposal include the top of Primrose Hill in the heart of the city for a sunset picnic, on the banks of the Thames with sections of the world’s most famous skyline in the background, and atop The Shard, one of the tallest buildings in Europe.
