Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Paris

Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Paris is something people around the world dream about. So if you’re lucky enough to actually be in the City of Light during this time, be sure to grab a glass of champagne and make the most of it. Unfortunately, fireworks are not usually part of New Year’s festivities in the French capital, but you may see some shot off here and there by individuals. One thing to keep in mind is that the whole of the city comes out on December 31st, so prepare yourself for large crowds and keep an extra eye on your belongings. Also, if you’re attending any type of event, be sure to book well in advance as this time of year fills up fast.

Get Into the Festive Spirit on the Champs-Elysées

This world-famous boulevard is the place to be when the year changes over to 2014. Crowds fill the streets as the Eiffel Tower comes into view, which lights up in a sparkling display as the clock strikes midnight. From here, there are plenty of places to go dancing or dining. If you really want to splash out, make a reservation at Le Fouquet’s restaurant – a lavish after-party spot for famous Cannes Film Festival revelers.

French Can-Can at the Moulin Rouge

If money is no issue, then you simply must reserve a seat at the Moulin Rouge dance hall, where a spectacular show is on offer to bring in the new year. First, you’ll be treated to a 5-course gala dinner, complete with champagne and lobster, followed by French can-can, more champagne and a dance party that goes all through the night. Be warned: the popularity of this iconic spot has pushed prices up into near fantasy – at press time, tickets were going for a measly 1,066 dollars.

Enjoy a Dinner Cruise

What better way to enjoy the twinkling lights of the Eiffel Tower than from the seat of a riverboat? As you coast along the Seine river, you’ll be treated to dinner and champagne, with some cruise operators offering musical entertainment to boot. As you wish one another “Happy New Year,” you’ll enjoy such magical Paris sights as Notre Dame Cathedral, the Tuileries Gardens and the Louvre museum. Check out Bateaux Parisiens or Bateaux Mouches for more information.

A Walk Around Montmartre

If you’re looking for a festive atmosphere on New Year’s Eve and hoping for a more quaint version of Champs-Elysées-style revelry, head to Montmartre. Here, you’ll find something for everyone’s budget, from moderately-price restaurants, to upscale spots like the Chamarré Montmartre – offering a decadent 159 euro meal that includes warm oysters, fois gras, lobster and aged cheeses. Or, simply head to the butte and admire the fabulous view of the city, all lit up, as street performers put on a show behind you.
