Survey: Eiffel Tower most photographed tourist site

Munich most popular destination among millennial travelers

When you snap a picture on vacation, are you curious to know how many other people are taking the exact same photo? Well, Fat Tire Tours conducted a worldwide consumer survey on social media usage and vacations, primarily surrounding social media preferences and travel habits. After taking a look at how social media was influencing their travel habits and social media preferences, we narrowed down our findings to focus on what travelers were interested in when visiting Paris, London, Barcelona, Munich and Berlin. Our survey garnered more than 1,500 respondents, and we are sharing our findings with you here.

The most popular tourist sites were Paris’ Eiffel Tower (25 percent) and Seine River (21 percent), as well as London’s Tower Bridge (17 percent). Most popular foods were all in Paris: croissants (17 percent), crepes (14 percent) and wine (13 percent).

Barcelona

Barcelona travelers were equally as likely to be heavy selfie-takers versus group photo/video takers. 40 percent of Barcelona travelers said that selfies accounted for 80 percent of their photos/videos (the same percent as group photo/videos). 83 percent of Barcelona travelers used a selfie stick at least once during their trip

Barcelona travelers are big nature/landscape picture takers. When asked what percent of their photos/videos were of nature/landscapes, 42 percent of Barcelona travelers said 80 percent and above (compared to food (40 percent), experiences (37 percent), and buildings (30 percent).

Berlin

Berlin, the second-favorite destination for millennials, is home to travelers were slightly inclined to be heavy selfie takers. When asked what percent of their photos/videos were of selfies, 50 percent of Berlin travelers said 80 percent and above (compared to 48 percent of Berlin travelers for group photos/videos). 83 percent of Berlin travelers used a selfie stick at least once during their trip

Berlin travelers are big picture takers of their food and dining experiences. When asked what percent of their photos/videos were of food/dining, 50 percent of Berlin travelers said 80 percent and above (compared to nature (48 percent), experiences (47 percent), and buildings (39 percent).

  1. Currywurst (56% of Berlin travelers)
  2. Berliner Pfannkuche (46% of Berlin travelers)

London

London travelers were slightly inclined to be heavy selfie takers. When asked what percent of their photos/videos were selfies, 37 percent of London travelers said 80 percent and above (compared to 35 percent of London travelers for group photos). 69 percent of London travelers used a selfie stick at least once during their trip

London travelers are big nature/landscape picture takers. When asked what percent of their photos/videos were of nature/landscapes, 35 percent of London travelers said 80 percent and above (compared to food (32 percent), experiences (30 percent), and buildings (27 percent)

  3. Tower of London (48% of London travelers)

  1. River Thames (55% of London travelers)

  3. James’s Park (36% of London travelers)

Top 3 photographed foods

  1. Fish & chips (44% of London travelers)
  2. Sunday roast and yorkshire pudding (43% of London travelers)
  3. Pint of beer or cider (38% of London travelers)

Munich

Munich was the most popular destination for millennial travelers, with 91 percent. Munich travelers are heavy group photo/video takers. When asked what percent of their photos/videos were of a group, 45 percent of Munich travelers said 80 percent and above (compared to 39 percent of Munich travelers for selfies). Munich travelers were also the highest selfie-stick users, with 85 percent using one during their trip.

  3. Hofgarten and Flaucher (tied at 40% of Munich travelers)

Top 3 photographed foods

  1. Schmalznudel (46% of Munich travelers)
  2. Schweinshaxe and Knödel (45% of Munich travelers)
  3. Buzhenina (39% of Munich travelers)

Paris

Travelers are big selfie-takers in the city of lights. When asked what percent of their photos/videos were selfies, 37 percent of Paris travelers said 80 percent and above (compared to 34 percent of Paris travelers for group photos). 77 percent of Paris travelers used a selfie stick at least once during their trip.

Paris travelers are also big nature/landscape picture takers. When asked what percent of their photos/videos were of nature/landscapes, 34 percent of Paris travelers said 80 percent and above (compared to food (32 percent), buildings (27 percent) and experiences (27 percent).

Paris is also largely popular among travelers from the United States—70 percent of respondents stated they were visiting from the United States, the largest of any city surveyed!
