If you don’t go to an exhibition while you’re in Paris, you’ll be missing out! There’s such a variety of shows on offer, there’s bound to be something to tempt you. Here’s are five of our favorites for spring 2014…
I, Augustus, Emperor of Rome
March 19 – July 13, 2014
Le Grand Palais
We’ll forgive you for not necessarily knowing that it’s the 2000th anniversary of the death of Emperor Augustus (the founder of the Roman Empire and adopted son of Julius Caesar). To commemorate his reign, the Grand Palais – one of the most beautiful buildings in Paris – is putting on an exhibition. There will be statues, sculpted reliefs, frescoes, furniture, tombs and even a reconstruction of a villa from the slopes of Mount Vesuvius.
Why this exhibition? The Romans don’t get enough credit these days. You might not be aware of the influence Augustus had on Paris, and the legacy that he left behind. History fans, this one’s for you.
Paris 1900, la Ville spectacle
April 2 – August 17, 2014
Le Petit Palais
Opposite the Grand Palais, the Petit Palais is equally as stunning as her big sister. The exhibition Paris 1900 is going to be fantastic: it’s a celebration of Paris’ Belle Epoque era, when millions of tourists flocked to see the International World Fair (for which several of the city’s most iconic monuments were built) and to experience the hotbed of art, culture and entertainment that Paris had to offer. There will be over 600 works to admire, including art, costumes, jewelry, sculpture and films.
Why this exhibition? If you’re visiting the city, you really should learn about the fascinating history of Paris at the start of the 20th century. There’s also a fun trail, where you follow the route of Paris’ visitors in 1900 as they made their way around the city. There’s never been such a big exhibition on this period before!
Les Impressionistes en Privé
February 12 – July 6, 2014
Marmottan Monet Museum
Another anniversary being celebrated this spring is the 80th birthday of the Marmottan Monet Museum, one of my favorite museums in Paris. They have put together 100 Impressionist works by artists such as Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Degas, and Boudin from private collections, most of which have never been exhibited to the general public.
Why this exhibition? Art enthusiasts, you simply cannot miss out on this great opportunity to see such a rare collection of artwork. It’s also a chance to introduce the family to Impressionist art, as the collection isn’t overwhelming, and the museum is a real gem.
Coming into Fashion, a Century of Photography at Condé Nast
March 1 – May 25, 2014
Palais Galliera
Fashion photography is an art genre in itself, and the discovery of many of the most talented fashion photographers was made by the publisher Condé Nast, who launched many a career on the pages of his magazines (Vogue and Glamour, for example). The exhibition will be held at Paris’ fashion museum Palais Galliera, and features photographs and original magazines from Condé Nast’s archives around the world.
Why this exhibition? Obviously, this show will appeal to anyone interested in fashion or photography. You will have the unique opportunity to see work from over 80 photographers, and indulge in some fashion fantasy!
Barbie Retro Chic
February 11- September 13, 2014
Musée de la Poupée-Paris
Lastly, an exhibition that will appeal to the little girl in all of us! The Barbie Retro Chic exhibition is being held at the Musée de la Poupée-Paris (Paris’ Doll Museum) and showcases Barbie’s wardrobe during the 1960s. With one-of-a-kind costumes and around fifty vintage dolls on display, it’s not hard to see why one Barbie is bought every three seconds in the world. There are workshops for children, including creating Barbie’s dream dress (bring your own doll).
Why this exhibition? If you have a little girl who loves dolls, this is a no-brainer! But even adults will enjoy this fun and atypical exhibition, reminding us of our childhood and teaching us about the history of this iconic doll.
