One of Berlin’s coolest spots to relax and unwind for the last 10 years is the floating barge pool of the Badeschiff in the Arena complex. It’s actually not a completely new concept in the city, as having a barge in the Spree was introduced almost a century ago. Now though, a plan is in the works to completely transform swimming options in the Spree, and this about as central in the city as it gets.
The water in the Spree isn’t the cleanest and even for participants of the Berlin Triathlon that must take a dip in the river, it’s surely worth thinking twice about taking a plunge. Should new plans be realized, however, an entire swath of the river will be naturally cleaned, filtered, and put to public use.
Imagine swimming in the river near the UNESCO Museum Island or the still-in-construction recreation of the Stadtschloss! That’s the idea currently investigation by the government. Find out more here, and let’s keep our fingers crossed this ingenious concept becomes an entertaining reality:
