Come Thirsty to Our Champagne Day Trip

Enjoy a full day excursion from Paris to the region known all over the world for its production and preservation of a product that is linked to ship launchings, wedding toasts, and victory celebrations: Champagne!

Our first stop in the Champagne region takes you back some 300 years with a visit to the Benedictine Abbey in Hautvillers, where the famous Dom Perignon pioneered some of the production methods that made champagne the drink it is today. As you tour the abbey and see where Perignon himself worked, you’ll learn about the dangers of exploding wine bottles and how the search to stop this phenomenon actually drove many of Perignon’s innovations, much more than his love of sparkling wine. Before leaving Hautvillers, you’ll stop by a scenic overlook to enjoy a light breakfast and an amazing view.

The story of champagne will make you thirsty and we have just the solution: your next stop is a family-run winery where the owner will show you around and teach you how his family has been making champagne for three generations. As you learn to distinguish the tasting notes of good champagne, you’ll be treated to a little surprise: The owner will demonstrate the proper method for ‘sabering’ a bottle of champagne, and as you taste its contents, you’all also learn the myth-filled history of the practice. Like many French traditions, Napoleon was involved.

Your next stop is the champagne capital of the world; the town of Epernay, where you’ll break for lunch. It’s not included but your guide will be happy to direct you toward their favorite restaurants for champagne’s hearty Cuisine du Terroir.

After lunch, you’ll step into the cave of Moët & Chandon, beneath the famous Avenue de Champagne, for a tour and tastings. There is a king’s ransom of bubbly hidden under this very unique street and once you taste Moët’s most popular blend, you’ll understand why many call this the most valuable street in France. You’ll also learn how big champagne houses have managed to make big money while staying true to old production methods.

Be sure to come thirsty, we take care of all the driving and logistics so you can enjoy the five champagne tastings included in the price of the trip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rich and lovely experience I was hesitate to give up a full day in Paris for this day trip, but it was a rich and lovely experience. The tour guide was interesting, knowledgeable, and thoughtful. We spent the day taking in many different aspects of the region providing an excellent "taste" of Champagne. The day included everything from visiting a war memorial and beautiful vineyard to tastings and being in a cave with hundreds of thousands of bottles of champagne! It was a fantastic day full of surprises. I now have a new appreciation for the bubbles that I've always loved so much. My special thanks to Hugo and Fat Tire Tours.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Tour Guide and a super fun day! My husband and I were concerned that this tour would be boring, generic, and only provide a taste of what the Champagne region has to offer. Fortunately, this trip exceeded our expectations. Our tour guy (Hugo) was charming, running, and informative. He was a professional at providing information in an interesting and entertaining way. We enjoyed the boutique champagne cellar we visited and we enjoyed having a lunch break (where we had some time to taste other champagnes and get some food). The tour is all day but it was so fun and so worth it. My only critiques are: 1) The family run tour guide and the Moet tour guide were hard to understand and boring 2) The information about the tour day was pretty vague, so we didn’t know what to expect. More details would have been helpful
