Private Berlin Wall Bike Tour

Private Berlin Wall Bike Tour

During the second half of the twentieth century, divided Berlin was the epicenter of the Cold War. On this half-day tour, we will venture away from the innermost part of the city to get away from the commonplace sites and dive into how the Wall makes Berlin the unique capital it is today. We will ride parallel to the route of the famous Berlin Wall, crossing a once divided city and learning about the differences between the East and West.

A private tour is quite simply the best way to ensure a completely personalized experience.  You will meet your private tour guide at our Alexanderplatz shop, conveniently located just beneath the TV Tower.  You will have plenty of time to test out your bikes, and your guide will provide you with a brief backdrop to the Cold War, so that you can better understand the ideological differences between the East and the West before even arriving at your first stop.

Throughout the tour, you will have plenty of time to stop, ask questions, take pictures, and learn about the turbulent history of this unique time in Germany’s past.  Your guide will speak about the ideological foundations of the Cold War, the Berlin Airlift, the division of Germany, and the global events that paved the way for the construction of the Berlin Wall.

Stopping at the Palace of Tears, a former checkpoint where Westerners were scrutinized by Border Guards during visits to the East, you will see first-hand how physical barriers created societal rifts. There are not many remaining East German Border Guard Towers, but we will show you one that still stands on the way to the Berlin Wall Memorial.  There, we will see one of the most famous tunnel escapes. We will also see the place where secret East German police files are kept and share stories about some of the most prominent spies of the time.  East German Churches helped to end the communist state, and we will see a few that are still intact. We will also discuss ghost stations, escape attempts, espionage, and the lasting memory of this turbulent period in Berlin’s history.

This is a great tour to ask questions, get to know your guide, and take pictures of some of the Wall remnants.  We like to allow for a refreshment break during the tour (cost not included) which is a perfect time to talk about all things Berlin to ensure you get the most out of your stay.  There will also be an opportunity during this break to walk around a former No Man’s Land area on your own.

This private tour is just a few hours long, but we know that it will provide you with the history and stories to help you better understand this divided time in Germany’s history.  Your guide can point out museums and monuments to check out after the tour and give you the best information to maximize your time in Berlin.

Similar to all of our cycle tours, our guides will set and maintain a pace that suits your group.  We have comfortable city-cruiser style bicycles to ensure that your Private Berlin Wall Tour is relaxing, safe, and tons of fun.

Our tours are great options for families and kids are very welcome.  We have several types of kids’ bikes, seats, and helmets to make sure everyone of all sizes is comfortable on tour.  Our Berlin Wall Bike Tour does cover some difficult subjects, so please judge if your kids are going to be interested and able to digest the info.

Don’t worry, it’s just like riding a bike!  Our tours move at a very comfortable pace so don’t worry if you are a bit rusty.  If you are worried about being comfortable on the bike, feel free to stop by the shop a bit early and you can take a few practice laps.
