Overview

Il Duomo, or the Dome of Florence is a must-see on any visit to the Renaissance Pearl.  This is the famed dome roof that sits atop Florence’s Cathedral; the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. It’s been a fixture of the Florence skyline since 1436 and you can see it from almost anywhere in the city, but it’s best kept secret is its spectacular rooftop viewing deck! Join us on this tour to the very peak of Florence as we climb up to the spectacular dome of the cathedral without the hassle of waiting in lines.

Good to Know
  • All guests must be at least 7 years of age or older to participate.
  • As an active place of worship, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore requires guests to have their shoulders and knees covered. It is sufficient to bring along a light scarf or cardigan and put them on prior to entering the holy areas. We cannot be held responsible for denied entry due to improper dress.
  • All guests are required to remove hats and sunglasses when inside the Duomo.
  • Bulky bags and backpacks are not allowed inside portions of this tour including the Dome. You are welcome to leave larger bags at our office where a member of our staff will keep a watchful eye over them, but please note that this tour will end at the Cathedral, which is a five minute’s walk from our office.
  • It is recommended to wear flat and comfortable shoes.  There are 463 stairs to climb to the rooftop viewing deck.
  • Please note that this tour is not advised for people who have tendencies of claustrophobia or fear of heights.

Duomo Specific Questions

Is there a dress code inside the Duomo?

Most catholic churches in Italy require a dress code in order to enter.

For The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, you are requested to be covered from shoulders to knees (shoulders, chest, stomach and thighs must be all covered by clothing).

It is permissible to wear shorts, provided that they are long enough to cover your thighs and knees.
You are also permitted to wear tank tops or spaghetti strap dresses, but you will need to bring with you a garment (shawl, jacket, cardigan) that can cover all the exposed parts between your shoulders and knees when you enter the building.

Can I bring my bag/backpack inside?

Will my entry tickets still be valid after the tour?

The tickets included with your tour are valid for one-time entrance to every site of the Opera del Duomo complex:
  • The Museum
  • The Bell Tower
  • The Baptistery
  • The Crypt and Cathedral
As part of the tour, you will enter the museum, private terraces and climb to the top of the dome. These sites will not be accessible a second time with the ticket that we provide. So, for example: If you wish to visit the museum again after the tour, you will need to independently purchase a new ticket.
  • You can use the ticket provided to enter (one time per site) the remaining locations: The Bell Tower, Baptistery and Cathedral Crypt.
  • During the tour you will receive skip-the-line access, however post-tour this service is no longer guaranteed.
  • Please show your ticket to the personnel at each site and they will indicate the first time slot available for you.

General Tour Questions

Where is the tour meeting point?

The tour meets at Via dei Cimatori 9R, 50122 Florence.  Please be advised that there is not great mobile phone reception in and around our office, so screenshots of the walking directions can be helpful.

How long before my tour should I arrive?

The tour meeting time is 15 minutes prior to the start time. No refunds or re-bookings can be provided for late arrivals or no-shows after tour commencement or departure.

What is your cancellation policy?

Activities including tickets or special entrances, such as this one, may only be rescheduled for free up to 72 hours in advance. These activities are also only refundable more than 72 hours in advance of the activity start time. Within 72 hours, we will only be able to issue a partial refund or future credit.

What is your weather policy? What if it rains?

Our tours run rain or shine, and we have rain ponchos available in our office. We encourage all guests to consult the weather forecast and plan your dress accordingly.

In the summer months, please prepare for the heat by bringing/wearing adequate sun protection, and staying hydrated. Even if you are accustomed to high temperatures, air-conditioning is not always available in Italy.

Are reservations required?

Yes, reservations are required for all tours.

Is this tour offered in any other languages, or only English?

All scheduled tours are in English, but private tours can sometimes be scheduled in other languages, given we have a tour guide who speaks the language of your choice.

Is this tour appropriate for children?

All guests must be at least 7 years of age or older to participate.
