FAQ

  • Expand/Collapse Are reservations required?

No, reservations are not required but we do appreciate bookings in advance. We keep 10-12 spots open for those who decide to tour with us at the last minute. Please do your best to arrive at the Queensway meeting point a little early to claim your spot.

  • Expand/Collapse What is your cancellation policy?

We have a 72 hour cancellation policy for a full refund. If you miss the tour for any reason, we'll gladly reschedule you on another available tour anytime for up to a year. If you can't make it, it is a good idea to email us ahead of time.

  • Expand/Collapse Where is the meeting point?

Directly outside Queensway tube station, which is on the Central Line (the red line cutting across the map from east to west). 15 minutes before the start of the tour, one of our guides will be standing by the red phone boxes holding a Fat Tyre sign.

  • Expand/Collapse Do tours run all year round?

Yes, from November to March we will run tours on a reduced schedule at 11am from Thursdays to Mondays, inclusive. Please see the tour page for full details.

  • Expand/Collapse Is the tour difficult?

No. Most of the time is spent on bike lanes within the Royal Parks. There is a bit of road riding and a few crossings so a basic level of cycling proficiency is required.

  • Expand/Collapse What is your weather policy?

We run tours rain or shine and have plenty of rain ponchos. We find tours in the rain to be a different kind of fun and an even more fun memory! If you have a reservation and the weather is really bad, you are welcome to reschedule the tour for any other day for up to year.

  • Expand/Collapse Do we stop for lunch?

Yes. We usually stop near Trafalgar Square where there are plenty of options for lunch including to join your guide at a traditional English pub. Otherwise, we may stop in St James park next to a cafe.

  • Expand/Collapse Where does the tour end?

Both tours finish at the same place they start.

  • Expand/Collapse Do we go inside the museums and monuments?

No, the bike tours are an overview of the sites and more about getting a feel for the city. However, on private tours you can arrange to take extra time at the sites if you'd like to go inside.

  • Expand/Collapse Will we be able to take photos?

Yes. There will be a chance to take many photos at the designated stops.

  • Expand/Collapse Is there a space to store bags or luggage?

Yes. You are welcome to leave bags, luggage or unwanted family members in our garages. Someone is usually in the office and it will be locked up if they have to leave. While we have never had a single case of theft or loss of items, you do leave them at your own risk.

  • Expand/Collapse Do you provide the bikes?

    Absolutely.

  • Expand/Collapse Can I supply my own bike?

You are welcome to bring your own bicycle and will receive a discount of 10%. Our insurance only covers the theft of our own bicycles, so please do bring your own lock for the lunch stop.

  • Expand/Collapse Do you have children's bikes?

Yes. We have kids bikes, tag-alongs and baby seats. Please make a reservation online if you have children in your group and let us know how many are with you, and their ages, in the NOTES section of your reservation - this way we can make sure we have the right sized bikes set aside for everyone in your group.

  • Expand/Collapse Is this tour appropriate for children?

Absolutely! We have loads of families and we're a great family activity. We offer multiple bike options for children depending on their age, size, and riding ability. Please keep in mind that children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult on the tour.

    • For children up to 12 years old or 45kg (100lbs) without good bike handling skills we offer 2-wheeled tandems that allow the passenger to pedal or coast, without having to maintain a high level of balance. All riders over 45kg (100lbs) must ride their own bicycle. We have various sized city bikes to accommodate just about every size of rider, from extra small 20 inch wheeled bikes for riders that are 3.3ft (100cm) to extra large for riders up to 6.5ft (198cm). Unfortunately, we do not have adult tricycles, adult tandems, or bikes with training wheels for adults or children that may be less confident in their riding ability.
    • There is no additional charge for trailers, tandems or baby seats. Due to limited availability, please book baby seats, trailers, tandems, 20” and 24” wheeled bikes in advance.
    • Please Note: All extra small 20 inch and small 24 inch bikes are equipped with both hand brakes.
    • Our city tours are very casual, with only slight elevation changes on varying surfaces including smooth gravel and pavement. It is necessary, however, that any person participating in our bike tours have at least some bike riding experience, and should be comfortable riding in a group.
  • Expand/Collapse Is a helmet included?

Yes. You are not compelled by law to wear helmets in the UK, but we have more than enough for everyone so the choice is entirely yours.

  • Expand/Collapse Do you rent bikes?

Yes, but, you must contact us ahead of time, especially during the summer when all the bikes may be taken up on the tours.

  • Expand/Collapse Can you suggest a bicycle repair shop in London?

Our very excellent mechanic, Alex, is available to work on your bike so please feel free to get in contact with us if you would like to book your bike in with him: http://www.lezcycles.com/about.html

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cycling on freezing day Five of us cycled with Max on what was probably the coldest day in London this winter and we all enjoyed it immensely. Max's great knowledge delivered in such an entertaining way made us forget the cold! He answered all our varied questions and even gave us great info on good curry house. Well done Max and well done fat tires for the usual really comfy bikes. We will be back! Phyl

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! Had the best time on my tour. I am ashamed to say I have forgotten my guide's name, but he was awesome (he had a beard, if that helps narrow it down at all?). I scheduled a tour on a drizzly weekday in January, and luckily (for me) no one else joined our group, so I got a private tour. My guide was very knowledgable, enthusiastic and gave me a ton of great tips for enjoying London after the tour. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to get acquainted with the city in a non-traditional way. It's a great way to get your bearings at the beginning of your trip.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best way to see London I've done Fat Tire Bike tours of Paris, Berlin and Barcelona, so rounding off the experience with a Fat Tire bike tour of London was a no brainer. It is the best way to get around London and see the major sights and have the history of the monuments and sights explained.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Relaxed and Informative All of the tour guides here are very down to earth and real guys. They will have a normal conversation with you in betweem their very entertaining stories. This tour is different than others because it is the only one with a permit to ride in public parks. Very worthwhile.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Colin's was a great tour guide This was one of the highlights of our trip to London last week. Colin was a thoughtful and engaging tour guide, breathing life and humour into some of London's colourful history.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good tour for locals too! What a great tour! I'm a UK national, and was looking for an interesting way to spend a day off. This was it. Our tour guide, Colin, made the tour engaging, and fun from beginning to end. I learned so much, despite having visited these places before. It's a far better way to understand history than through any classroom or textbook. The cycling is low key and not demanding.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a London must-do My girlfriends and I loved our tour last Friday with Nick; he was knowledgable, patient with questions, and very kind. This was my third bike tour this year with Fat Tire (other two were in Paris and Berlin), and London/Nick certainly did not disappoint. I frequently cycle at home, but I think most people could do this tour; since we spent quite a bit of time in bike lanes and in parks, I would recommend this to anyone, including those a bit nervous about biking through a city. Certainly a highlight of our trip!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So much to see in one day!! It was great to be able to ride our bicycles around many highlights in the city in just a few short hours. Our tour guide Isabel was very knowledgeable and fun. I have done this to her two times now and would definitely do it again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great way to see lots of London this was an amazing tour and experience. we only had a couple days in london, and wanted to cover as much ground as possible while still soaking in some great information and learning. we got all that and more. the stops along the tour were exactly what we wanted to see, and we got more than we expected in helpful and interesting info about each site. our guide max was fantastic, and would recommend this to anyone visiting london, and if you do it earlier in your trip, it will really help set the schedule for the rest of yoru time

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best Way to See London!! I've now been on 4 Fat Tire Bike tours (3 in London, 1 in Barcelona), and I have absolutely loved each one! I've done these tours as a child (Age 12) with my family and by myself as a student traveller and would reccomend them to anyone (iven that the kids can ride bikes). The routes are easy to ride and they pass all the most important points of the city! The guides tell great stories, which include history but will also keep you laughing! It's a great activity to do on your first day in a city as you'll see a lot of the main tourist attractions and can use the ride as a way to choose what you do/visit for the rest of your trip!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible tour! My sister and I visited London in Oct 2016 and took this tour. Our tour guide, Nick, was knowledgeable and fun! The pace was just right, relaxing but moved along quickly enough to see so much of the beautiful parks and many of the lovely tourist spots, including Buckingham palace, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, etc. 4 hours went by very quickly. We took this tour our first full day in London and it gave us a great sense of this amazing city! I would wholeheartedly recommend it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Overview of London What a great way to see some of London's exceptional "Royal" Sites. We had 4 short days to see as much as possible, and biking with Fat Tire was the way to go. Our exceptional guide, Nick, knew exactly the right amount of information to impart, and the ways to keep our group engaged during the rain. Perfect 4 hours!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fatastic tour I was given this as a birthday present and it was a fantastic day. It was strange being a tourist in our own country but Nick, the tour guide, was incredibly knowledgable, extremely courteous and had so many stories to tell at all the places we stopped at. We learnt a lot even though we thought we already knew lots about London. Nick was very respectful, a great salesman for other London attractions and ensured that we all kept together and yet still managed to negotiate the tourists considerately. Highlights were being in exactly the right place to watch the Changing of the Guard march off from Buckingham Palace and to see the Household Cavalry returning to barracks. If you only do one guided tour of London, this is the tour to do - whether you are a native of the UK or a visitor. Brilliant!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tour, great guide! We had a great tour. The parks are beautiful and lots of historical facts pass by. Our tourguide was great. He told about the history, great stories and used us as actors to enlive history! He spoke english in a pleasant and not to speedy way and had lots of humor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best way to see the city Booked this with a friend who lives in London (I'm from NZ) and we both got so much out of it. Bikes are well maintained, the route was not intimidating at all, plenty of stops to take pics and our guide Nick was very interesting. You see more than on a bus tour, get further than you would on foot and the 3 hours went really quickly. Would thoroughly recommend this to those new and not so new to London. Seriously good value for money

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Tour and Guide The tour itself was very informative and we got to see a lot in a short amount of time. It was awesome being able to bike through the parks and such. I also want to emphasize how good my tour guide was. I ended up crashing (my own fault) and almost passing out. The guide took care of me and came back for me when I had to stop to sit down. I never felt anxious about the situation because the guide was so good at his job
