In 1933, following the ascension of Hitler to the position of Chancellor, the Dachau concentration camp was opened as a prison and brutal forced labour facility for political prisoners. Later, Dachau inmates included anyone deemed by the party to be a non-citizen. The only Nazi concentration camp to run for the entire 12 year duration of the war, and also to serve as a training facility and model for SS brutality applied to every other camp opened afterwards, Dachau concentration camp saw 200,000 inmates with more than 40,000 people murdered there through starvation, disease, torture and overwork.  

After the liberation of Dachau KZ’s inmate population by allied forces in 1945, Dachau concentration camp, now known as Dachau KZ memorial site, functions not only as a place of mourning for victims and a place of remembrance for survivors, but also as a modern place of learning for visitors from all over the world.
