Monet Gardens & Giverny Bike Tour

Join us on an unforgettable journey into the heart of French impressionism; Giverny!  This tiny village located about 45 minutes northwest of Paris offers the perfect getaway from the hectic city streets.  We’ll meet at our office (24 rue Edgar Faure, 75015) and take a private bus for the relaxing drive through the Normandy countryside.  As you’re passing beautiful wheat and sunflower fields, your guide will begin to explain the history of impressionism and its founding father, Claude Monet.

Monet’s works have influenced artists for decades and you’ll have the opportunity to see his inspiration throughout the day.  First stopping at the open-air market in Vernon, you’ll have some time to explore the various stalls and taste some local specialties.  Your guide will point out the not-to-miss items and give you some basic French to then procure your very own picnic lunch!

Following the market, we’ll pick out our bikes and make our way across the Seine towards the Old Windmill, a beloved site by Monet that he captured in many of his paintings.  During lunch, your guide will continue to provide you with information and anecdotes on Monet, impressionism, and the rise of it as a renowned art style in the late nineteenth century.

Equipped with the knowledge to appreciate it, you’ll cruise down a 5 kilometer/3 mile bike path to Monet’s homestead.  Here, you’ll have free time to visit the brilliantly colored flowers lining every inch of the gardens’ pathways, the Japanese bridge and famous water lilies, and his house, left intact from when he last lived there.  Imagine yourself strolling through one of his vibrant paintings as you stop to take in the hundreds of varieties of flowers growing along every pathway.

We encourage you to visit the town of Giverny after the gardens; you can see artists’ studios, quaint cafés, and the cemetery where Monet is buried.  Towards the end of the afternoon, we’ll gather everyone together again and make our way back to Vernon, put the bikes away, and board the bus for a peaceful ride back to Paris.

If some members of your group are hesitant about biking, we also offer a walking tour of Monet’s gardens.  You will be able to overlap with the walking group throughout several parts of your day including the market, lunch, and walking through Monet’s house and gardens.  It’s a great way for groups of all abilities and ages to visit this beautiful destination together!

FAQ

  • Expand/Collapse Where is the meeting point?

The tour meets at our office located at 24, rue Edgar Faure, 75015 Paris. The closest Métro station is Dupleix (line 6).

  • Expand/Collapse How long will we get to explore the Gardens and Monet's house?

You will have approximately 2 hours to explore on your own.

  • Expand/Collapse What cycling skill level do I need for this tour?

While all of our tours maintain a leisurely pace, we want our guests to have fun and be safe, so being able to ride a bike is paramount.

Our Monet's Garden Bike Tour is perfect for intermediate bike riders. You should have good balance, be able to start and stop comfortably, and be familiar with hand brakes. Although this tour is less focused on cycling than some of our other bike tours, we'll split our time between a bike path and riding through the center of town. Riders should be prepared for a small hill, riding single-file behind other riders, and riding in a group. Safety is our number one priority but confidence in yourself is the first step to overall group safety.

If you're not sure how you'll fare, we invite you to try our Paris Day Bike tour first.

  • Expand/Collapse Is this tour appropriate for children?

Yes! Our Monet's Garden Bike Tour is a wonderful way for kids comfortable on bikes to discover the countryside of Normandy. We only ask that your children have been riding for a while, or, if they're under 10, you can reserve a tandem for them.

You can use this bike chart to help you reserve the appropriate bicycles for your little ones. Please keep in mind that children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult on the tour.

    • For children up to 10 years old or weighing under 32kg (70lbs), we have two-wheeled tag-along tandems. The child passenger sits on a seat and can pedal or coast. All riders weighing over 32kg (70lbs) must ride their own bicycle. This is not an option for adults or anyone over the weight or age limit.
    • We have various sized city bikes to accommodate just about every size of rider, from extra small 20 inch wheeled bikes for riders that are 3.3ft (100cm) to extra large for riders up to 6.5ft (198cm).
    • Unfortunately, we do not have adult tricycles, adult tandems, or bikes with training wheels for adults or children that may be less confident in their riding ability.
    • There is no additional charge for trailers, tandems or baby seats. Due to limited availability, please book baby seats, trailers, tandems, 20” and 24” wheeled bikes in advance.
    • Please Note: All extra small 20 inch and small 24 inch bikes are equipped with hand brakes.
  • Expand/Collapse What are your bike options?

  • Expand/Collapse Is a helmet included?

In Paris adults are not obliged to wear a helmet, however they are mandatory for children under 12. We have helmets of all sizes available in our office.
